A song sounds in an ad but you do not know what it is. You pick up the cellphone, wait 10 seconds and zas !: Shazam tells you the title of the subject that is ringing. With 150 million users, it is the most successful music recognition application in the mobile market. Will Mills, Director of Music and Contents of Shazam, has been at FICOD, the Forum of Digital Content that is held these days in Madrid, to review the state of the music sector in relation to the internet.
The performance of Shazam is basically very simple. What it does is to capture the ‘footprint’ of the song that matches its database, where they have 11 million songs stored. When it shows a match, the application also lets you buy the cation, listen to it on Spotify, share it on social networks or, one of its latest news, check its lyrics as a ‘karaoke’.
All this for free. And recently Shazam has backtracked on its strategy of monetizing its application. At the end of 2009 he decided to combine the free version with a ‘Premium’ model, limiting the songs that could be ‘taguear’ free to five songs per month. If you wanted more, you had to pay. But a few weeks ago the company decided to remove this limitation for free users, who again have no song recognition limit. In the same way, it has launched in open the new function LyricsPlay, that shows the letters of the songs in the screen.
In an interview with RTVE.es, Mills explained the reason for this turn in Shazam. “When Shazam started the mobile market it was very underdeveloped, now it has grown amazingly. Our projections tell us that we can now get the revenue from advertising, something we could not do when the market was not mature enough and we have Since this service on the mobiles had to be free “.
In total, four million songs are labeled every day, according to Mills, more than enough for the app to generate revenue for the ad impressions shown in the free version.
The manager of Shazam also points out that it is the most suitable model for his recently released Shazam TV, which currently only works in the US. An application that allows the user to interact with the television advertising and offers, for example, the possibility of buying the clothes that the characters carry in a series.
With the return to the free model Shazam also faces increased competition. Numerous programs do what Shazam does for example SoundHound which also offers other features such as the recognition of songs by humming, a functionality that at the moment does not consider developing in Shazam. “We will continue to focus on the recognition of recorded songs,” he says.
For Mills the key to success lies in the “eagerness to discover music”. “Shazam is what connects people with music, which we understand as a social experience,” he explains.
As for privacy concerns regarding the social layer in the application, Mills notes that the user can choose at any time with which friends he wants to share a topic. “Sharing is not obligatory, if there is a song that you feel ashamed to share with your friends, you do not have to do it”, he clarifies.
As a company Mills recognizes that they have not had to face the “buts” of the music industry they claim to have received “support”. “At first the industry was not quite sure what Shazam was or how it worked, but as it has evolved we have a very active collaboration.”
Outside of the big charts, there is also a place for the mobile to ‘hunt’ the songs of independent artists, who do not have the umbrella of a major label. “We have many independent artists, and anyone who wants to be in Shazam can get in Contact with us “.
